Because some people wanted it, I tracked down some source code (thanks jarpiain) and got Brent's Crawl 4.1 Alpha
running on CAO. I encourage you to make a separate account if you want to play it (see below for why).
I must warn you all that it's bad for the following reasons:
- It's unstable, an alpha release that was discarded by its developer, and I don't have time to deal with fixing crash bugs, even bad ones. (I will, though, keep a list of them here, so feel free to report them.)
- It's generally considered impossible to beat.
- It records ttyrecs in the normal place but morguefiles in a strange numbered directory in your ttyrec directory. This is how it was for old Crawl Stone Soup until we patched Stone Soup; we're not going to patch 4.1. That's why you probably want a separate account, so that your ttyrecs and such don't get cluttered.
- Oh and it might munge your macro file if you use your real account too.
- There are no plans for scoring scripts to pay any attention to 4.1. If you really want to see scores, the logfile is here.
- There are no plans for Henzell support for 4.1.
- 'm'essages don't work.
That said, enjoy. First winner gets a free drink on me next time we're in the same place.
Known bugs with workarounds:
- If someone is watching, the watcher sees the game segfault on close. This doesn't actually affect anything, as best I can tell.
- Stash file can occasionally become corrupt, making game unplayable until I delete your stash file. Think of this as like a meta-game super amnesia trap. You can turn off stash tracking to avoid this bug; that's sort of like a workaround!
Known bugs without workarounds:
- Impossible to win.
- Macro file not saved across sessions.
- Responds poorly to SIGHUP.
Wishlist:
(hint: you are not going to get things on this wishlist)
- Scoring scripts.
- Ability to specify -macro and -morgue from the command line, and to make morguefiles have the playername and date built in.
- 'm'essage support.
- A million pretty ponies with wings. And sparkles.
